Genus: Sichuanchelys YE & PI, 1997
Etymology: Sichuan- For Sichuan Province, China, where the Dashanpu locality is located, and Greek, chelys, "tortise."

Species: chowi YE & PI, 1997
Etymology: In honor of Dr. Zhou (= Chow) Ming-zheng of the IVPP.

Holotype: ZDM3014

Locality: Dashanpu (Dashnapu Dinosaur Quarry), lat. 29°5’N, long. 104°50’E, situated 11 km east of Zigong City, 250 km south of Chengdu, Hechuan County, Sichuan Basin, Sichuan (Szechwan) Province, China.

Horizon: Xaishaximiao (Shaximiao) Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Bathonian-Callovian Stage (DONG & TANG, 1984), Middle-Upper Dogger Epoch, Middle Jurassic.
Note: Bajocian (CHEN et al. 1982), Lower Middle Dogger Epoch, Middle Jurassic.

Material: A relatively complete shell.

ZDM3017: Almost but deformed shell with articulated carapace and plastron.

Species:  palatodentaata JOYCE, RABI, CLARK, & XU, 2016
Etymology: In reference to the presence of palatal teeth. The species epithet is here formed and used explicitly as a noun in apposition and therefore does naot have a gender.

Holotype: IVPP V18093

Locality: Wucaiwan Locality, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China.

Horizon: Upper part of the Shishugou Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Oxfordian Stage, Lower Malm Epoch, Early Late Jurassic.

Material: A partial skeleton of a subadult individual consisting of a near complete slightly crushed skull, missing much of the dorsal skull roofing, complete mandible visible in ventral view, right hyoid, near complete shell lacking the right half of the carapace and most of the pygal region, at least 22 caudals in partial articulation, disarticulated left scapula and coracoid, isolated left pubis, partial right or left manus, including carpals, phalangales, and unguals, left femur, and possible left tibia and fibula.

Referred material:

IVPP V18101-V18103: 3 poorly preserved carapaces. (Note: previously described under the name ?Sichuanchelys sp BRINKMAN, EBERTH, CLARK, ZING, & UW, 2013).

IVPP V18094: Partial skeleton of a subadult individual that includes a near complete skull crushed along the sagittal axis, left jar ramus, the damaged anterior plastral lobe, 5 disarticulated cervical vertebrae, right scapula, crushed left scapulocoracoid, adn right humerus.

IVPP V18095: Partial skeleton of a subadult consisting of heavily eroded carapace, near complete plastron lacking epiplastra and entoplastron, 2 cervical vertebrae, approximately 20 disarticulated caudals, isolated scapula and both humeri.

IVPP V18096: Partial skeleton of a subadult that includes posterior portion of dorsal skull roof, disarticulated carapace consisting of at least 11 costals, and 5 peripherals, near complete plastron lacking the epiplastra and entoplastron, at least 2 isolated cervicals, isolated scapula and ischium, left humerus, femur and tibia, and various unidentified distal limb bones.

 

Locality: 1.2 km to the north of the type locality, Wucaiwan Locality, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China.

Horizon: Upper part of the Shishugou Formation.

Material:

IVPP V18097: Highly fragmentary skeleton of a presumably adult individual consisting of heavily fragmented, partial skull comprised of nasal region, left cheek region, both prootics and partial quadrates, an partial basisphenoid, basioccipital, and exoccipital, near complete, but fragmented mandible, left lateral third of shell missing the nuchal and pygal region, at least 2 isolated caudals, and various unidentifiable fragments of long bone.
