Genus: Irajatherium MARTINELLI, BONAPARTE, SCHULTZ & RUBERT, 2005
Etymology: In honor of Professor Iraja Damiania Pintos, outstanding invertebrate paleontologist of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and Greek, therion, "beast."

Species: hernandezi MARTINELLI, BONAPARTE, SCHULTZ & RUBERT, 2005
Etymology: In honor of the technician Daniel Hernandez (museo municipal "Carmen Funes", Neuquen, Argentina) who discovered the type specimen.

Holotype: UFRGS-PV 0599T

Locality: 8 kilometers west of Candelaria, from a roadcut on the route BR 287 to Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil.

Horizon: Caturrita Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Possibly early Coloradian age, Early Norian Stage, Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.

Material: Incomplete left maxilla bearing the canine, 5 postcanines, and the alveolus of another one, both canine and the last postcanine are erupting, natural cast of the incomplete left dentary bearing an anterior postcanine, and a fragment of the left lower jaw with 2 postcanines, left humerus, left femur, and other indeterminate fragments.

UFRGS PV-1167-T: Right incomplete maxilla with a very long canine.

UFRGS PV-1175-T: Incomplete left maxilla with part of the canine, cranial portion of a right dentary including empty alveoli for 3 incisors, a partial canine, 2 postcanines and 2 empty alveoli for postcanines, a fragment of a the left dentary with 2 postcanines, one isolated canine and 2 isolated postcranines, and several undetermined fragments.

Locality: Linha Sao Luiz Locality, an abandoned quarry located 1.5 km northwest of downtown do Soturno Faxinal, 53°30'23"E, 29°34'08"S, near Barrio Santo Antonino, Faxinal do Soturno, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil.

Horizon: Caturrita Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Icidosaur Assemblage Zone.

Age: Adamanian, Lower Coloradian age, Late Carnian-Early Norian Stage, Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.

UFRGS PV-1068-T: Fragment of left maxilla, with the secondary palatal shelf, a right nasal, fragment of the left prootic and opisthotic, posterior portion of the left dentary with 4 potcanines, a fragment of a canine, a right humerus, and the probable proximal portion of tibia and fibula.

UFRGS Pv-1169-T: Right incomplete maxilla, bearing part of the canine.
