Genus: Macroscelosaurus HAUGHTON, 1918 non MUENSTER, 1830
Etymology: Greek, makros, "long" Greek, skele, "limb" and Greek, sauros, "lizard": Long limb lizard.

Etymology: In honor of Sidney Henry Haughton (1888-1982)
Note: Kuhn believed the hame was similar to Maroscelosaurus, a prolacertiform Muenster vide Meyer, 1852 which has an ‘o’ not an ‘e’ in the name. This is unwarranted and the original name is valid.

Etymology:

Holotype: SAM 4004

Locality: The slab was found built on the wall of a kraal at Gemsbokfontein, 12 miles from the town of Victoria West District, Northern Cape Province, South Africa.

Horizon: Middle Abrahamskraal Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Tapinocephalus zone (Dinocephalian zone KEYSER, 1979, SACS, 1980, KEYSER & SMITH, 1977-78, Lower Tapinocephalus zone, KITCHING, 1970, 1977, WATSON, 1914).

Age: Early Tatarian age, Guadelupian Stage, Middle Zeichstein Epoch, Middle Permian.

Material: Fragmentary skull and fragmentary skeleton.
