Etymology: In reference to the Elliot Formation, and Greek, therion, "beast."

Species: kerstenae emend SIDOR & HANCOX, 2006
Etymology: In honor of Mrs. Olga Kersten, farm owner and discover of the fossil.
= Ellotherium kersteani SIDOR & HANCOX, 2006
(Note: The authors used the wrong Latin ending for honoring a woman, it is not "i" it is "ae").

Holotype: BP/1/6106

Locality: Farm Beatrix, (coordinates 28°33.233'S, 27°57.816E, Rosendal District, Free (Orange Free) State Province, South Africa.

Horizon: Lower part of the Elliot Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Euskelosaurus Range Zone.

Age: Late Carnian or Early Norian Stage, Upper Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.

Material: Partial skull lackign tip of snout, occiput and mandible.
