Etymology: In reference to the region of Franconia (Franken in German), located in the northern part of Bavari, in southern Germany, where the specimen was found and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Etymology: In reference to the low neural spines in the posterior cervical and dorsal vertebrae.

Locality: Mistelgau fossil pit, Bayreuth District, Bavaria State, Germany.
Horizon: Jurensismergel Formation.
Biostratigraphy: Grammoceras thouarsense Zone.
Age: Upper Toarcian Stage, Late Lias Epoch, Early Jurassic.
Material: Nearly complete, three-dimensionally preserved, adn partily articulated skeleton.
