Etymology: In reference to Thuringia Germany and Latin, pelta, "a small shield": Thuringia shield.

Etymology: In honor of Ralf Werneburg (former Director of the Naturhistorisches Museum Schloss Bertholdsburg, Schleusingen) for his many importan contributions to our knowledge of Permian and Triassic tetrapods, especially from Thuringia.
Holotype: MB.R.6300.3
Locality: Former Klapproth brick pit (now reclaimed as part of a nature preserve), Mittelhausen (now part of the city of Erfurt), Thuringia State, Germany.
Horizon: Stuttgart Formation, Middle Keuper Subgroup, Keuper Group.
Biostratigraphy:
Age: Julina - early Tuvalian, Carnian Stage, Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.
Material: Paramedian plate.
