Etymology: From Pekin, North Carolina, which is near where the holotype was collect, and for the Pekin Formation, which is the stratigraphic unit that yielded the holotype.

Species: olseni HUNT & LUCAS, 1994
Etymology: For P. E. Olsen, who found the holotype, and for his diverse contributions to the study of Newark Supergroup.
