Etymology: In reference to Greer, Monongalia County, West Virginia, and Greek, herpeton, "crawling, reptile."

Etymology:

Holotype: CNMH 10931

Locality: On Deckers Creek, about 6 1/2 miles southeast of Morgantown, Greer, Monongalia County, West Virginia.

Horizon: Bickett Shale of the Bluefield Formation, Mauch Chunk Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Late Mississippian.

Material: Fragmentary skull and fragmentary skeleton.
