Etymology: After the orignial Latin (and current Italian and Rätoromanic) name of Canton of Aargau: Argovia, where the holotype was found and Greek, sauros, "lizard".

Species: martafernandezi MIEDEMA, BASTIAANS, SCHEYER, KLUG & MAXWELL, 2024
Etymology: In honor of renouned paleontologist and ichthyosaur expert Marta Fernandez, who has been a pioneer in the topic of marine reptiles and has, among her numerous works, described teh rare ichthyosaurs from the Middle Jurassic of South America.

Holotype: PIMUZ A/III 5279

Locality: Auenstein quarry at Oberegg, Kanton Aragau, Switzerland.

Horizon: Lower Acuminata beds, Hauptrogenstein Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Middle-Late Bajocian Stage, Dogger Epoch, Early-Middle Jurassic.

Material: Fragmentary skull, mandible, and fragmentary skeleton.
