Etymology: Greek, pro, "before" + Rotodactylus. Alluding to features close to Rotodactylus, but found in older deposits and therefore ossibly left by ancestors of the Rotodactylus trackmakers.

Etymology: mesaxonichnus refers to the longest digit III mesaxoy) of both manus and pes tracks.
