Genus: Paleolophus QIAO, CUI, ZHAO, LIU, LI, LU, CHOO & ZHU, 2025
Etymology: Greek, paleo, "ancient, old", refering to the fact that this specimen represents one of the earliest lungfishes, and Greek, lophus, "crest", referring to the tooth ridge on the lateral edge of the palate.

Species: yunnanensis QIAO, CUI, ZHAO, LIU, LI, LU, CHOO & ZHU, 2025
Etymology: In reference to Yunnan Province, where the specimen was found.

Holotype: IVPP V17971

Locality: Qingmen village, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, China.

Horizon: Posongchong Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Pragian Stage, Middle Early Devonian Epoch, Middle Early Devonian.

Material: Well-preserved and uncrushed skull.
