Genus: Nhanulepisosteus BRITO, ALVARADO-ORTEGA & MEUNIER, 2017
Etymology: Mixteca language, nhanu, "old" and Greek, lepisosteus (lepis), "scale" + osteus, "bone." The Mixtecs are an ethnic group who occupied the territory of Oaxaca,Soufh of MExico, including the type locality of the new species.

Etymology: In reference to the country in which the fossil was collected.

Holotype: IGM 4898

Locality: Llano Yosobe deposites, near the town of Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca State, southern Mexico.

Horizon: Sabinal Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Kimmeridge Stage, Malm Epoch, Late Jurassic.

Material: An incompete endochondral neurocranium with dermal bones.

Referred material:

IGM 4899: Left dentary.

IGM 4900 (part and counterpart): Partial left lower jaw presenting some dermal and pterygoid bones.

GIM 4901: Partial left lower jaw adn lacrimomaxillary.

IGM 4902: Disarticulated specimen including a broken dentary, some unidentified bones and scales.
