Genus: Grandemarinus COOPER, GUNN, BRITO, ZOUHRI & MARTILL, 2023
Etymology: In honor of palaeoichthylogist Dr Lance Grane, in recognition of his landmark studies on fossil and modern lepisosteiforms, the suffix marinus is the latinized translation of 'marine', pertaining to the fully marine strata in which the gar was found.

Etymology: In reference to the OUed Gheris that flows (sometimes) thorugh the village of Asfla from the Atlas Mounatins through th eTafilalt and into the Sahara never to reach the sea.

Holotype: FSAC-ASF 109

Locality: Asfla fossil mines on the escarpment of Assemer N'Tadirhoust, 4 km south-east of Asfla village, near Goulmina, Er Rachidia Province, Eastern Morocco.

Horizon: Asfla Member, Akrabou Formaiton.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Turonian Stage, Late Gallic Subepoch, Early Gulf Epoch, Middle Cretaceous.

Material: A near complee, articulated specimen.

Paratype:

NHM PF V 74004: A nodular block contaiing an articulated, near comlete skull roof, braincase and palate.

Reerred material:

FSAC-ASF 20: Nodular blocke (aprt) contaiing more than 150 artiujclated abdominal ganoid scales.
