Etymology: Greek, lamia, “sharklike fish”, and Greek, aspis, “shield”: referring to the sharklike shape of the dorsal sheild.

Species: longirpa ILYES & ELLIOTT, 1994
Etymology: Latin longiripa, "long shore," for J. D. Longhsore who found the orignal fossil locality.

Locality: Sevy Dolomite, near Ely, White Pince County, east-central Nevada.
