Etymology: Greek, angelos, "angel", based on its similarity in body form to that of the extant actinopterygina genus Pterophyllum, commonly known as angle fish, and Greek, akantha, "spine".

Etymology: Latin, acus, a noun in apposition, "needle," referring to the distinctive long thin spines.

Locality: Road cutting south of Grahamstown, Eastern Cape Provice, South Africa.

Biostratigraphy:

Material: An almost complete specimen in part and counterpart.
