Genus: Mekosuchus BALONET & BUFFETAUT, 1987
Etymology: The genderic name comes from Mek, which means big land in Lifou (Loyautes islands dialect), and from Greek, souchos, "crocodile."

Etymology: The specific name is an allusion to the fact it is unexpected to find a crocodyle in New Caledonia.

Material: Right dentary, teeth right jugal and quadratojugal, pterygoids, left premaxilla, atlas and axis, caudal vertebra and dorsal vertebra.

Note: Willis, 1995 believes that it may have climbed trees and may have had a life style similar to arboreal large lizards.
