Etymology: Appalachio-, for the occurrence of the specimen in eastern North America during the Late Cretaceous, and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Species: montgomeriensis CARR, WILLIAMSON, & SCHWIMMER, 2005
Etymology: In reference to the Montgomery County, Alabama, where the type locality is located, and Latin, -ensis, 'from'.

Holotype: RMM 6670 (McWane Center, Birmingham, Alabama (old Auburn University Museum of Paleontology (AUMP 2366))

Locality: Turnipseed Dinosaur Site. Found on the land owned by Mr. Rand Mrs. Sidney Turnipseed, Ser., east side of the County Highway 101 (Old Pike Road), 1.77 road km north of U. S. Highway 82 at the Dowing Crossroads in southeastern Montgomery County, Alabama.
Note: The site is approximately 108 m above mean sea level and located nearly at the center of SE 1/4, NE 1/4, NE 1/4, sec. 35, T14N, R20E.

Horizon: Demopolis Chalk.

Biostratigraphy: Lower Mosasaurus Acme-zone.

Age: Lower Navesinkan Age, Lower Upper Campanian Stage, Senonian Subepoch, Gulf Epoch, Late Cretaceous.

Material: Femora, tibiae, 1 fibula, 6 metatarsals, fragmentary right pubis, left ischium, 5 ungual phalanges (Claws), 8 phalanges, 8 caudal vertebrae, palatine, ectopterygoid, right pterygoid, left lacrimal,1 maxilla, nasals, right dentary, fragmentary right angular, fragmentary splenial, 13 teeth, several partial ribs, and several unidentified bones including skull components.

Note: Paleopathology, two fused caudal vertebrae.
