Etymology: Latin "american", reflects the species' status as the earliest unequivocal neoceratopsian in North America.

Holotype: OMNH 34557

Locality: OMNH locality V1057, 45°N, 109°W, Carbon County, Montana.

Horizon: Cloverly Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Basal part of Unit VII.

Age: ?Middle-Late Albian Stage, Middle Gallic Subepoch, Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.

Material: Fragmentary skull, and fragmentary dentary.
