Etymology: Greek, skotios, "dark" (referring ot the darkness of the fossil bone) and Greek, phryne, ‘toad’.

Species: putulosa ESTES, 1969
Etymology: Greek, pustulosa, referring to the distinctive pustular sculpturing of the referred skull elements.

Holotype: MCZ 3623

Locality: Bug Creek Anthills (BCA), 80 feet below the Tullock Formation in the west half of Section 9, T22N, R43E, McCone County, Montana.

Horizon: Hell Creek Formation.
