Etymology: Greek, mesos, "middle" and Greek, phryne, "toad": « middle toad », in reference to the Mesozoic age of the anuran and from the « middle Kingdom » of China.

Species: beipiaoensis GAO & WANG, 2001
Etymology: In reference to the city of Beipiao, Liaoning Province, China, near where the specimen was found.

Holotype: IVPP V11721

Locality: Heitizigou, approximately 25 km south of Beipiao City, Liaoning Province, China.

Horizon: Lower Yixian Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Early Cretaceous.

Material: Nearly complete skeleton with impression exposed as part and counterpart.
